20 He went on: “What comes out of a person is what defiles

Gn 6:5 “the human heart is devious from youth”
WB Yates ”I must lie down where all ladders start, In the foul

Need for Temptation
The symbolic meaning of temptation is that it reveals the
dividedness of our own wills: we are not as good as we

either Fall into discouragement or rigid high standards thus fall

St Augustine “only by temptation we come to know ourselves”
John Cassie “there are resident vices present in every human
soul, pre elective tendencies that lead us away from God and
more importantly, cause us to become discouraged and loose
faithful in the possibility of attaining close friendship with God.”
Hebrews 4:1-13
There must still be, therefore, a place of rest reserved for God’s

might copy this example of disobedience and be lost.
